Beneath a Baobab, Prince Harry and Meghan's Love Blossomed in Botswana

MAPULA LODGE, Botswana (Reuters) - In an exclusive Botswana safari camp where Prince Harry took Meghan Markle on a romantic getaway last year, guests wake to the sound of doves cooing in the trees and hippos splashing in the serene waters of the Okavango Delta.

Harry whisked the American actress away last year for a surprise holiday to celebrate her 36th birthday, hopping between luxury resorts in the sparsely populated southern African country renowned for its stunning wildlife and sweeping vistas.

The trip last August came a year into their relationship and a few months before they got engaged. Their wedding on May 19 is building up to be the social event of the year.

Harry sourced the diamond in Meghan's engagement ring from Botswana, the world's biggest producer.

The couple went to Botswana soon after they began dating in July 2016, a trip Harry described in a media interview last year as a "crucial" chance to get to know each other.

Their subsequent visit to the Okavango Delta last August has been kept a tight secret, with Kensington Palace and lodge managers declining to comment. But Reuters spoke to two local insiders who described the romantic escape.

At Mapula Lodge, an isolated $800-a-night retreat that translates as "mother of rain", Harry and Meghan slept in a traditional thatched cabin with an outdoor shower, their carved wooden bed looking out over a pristine lagoon.

The couple enjoyed a sunset cruise along the creeks that wind through the vast grasslands, stopping to try their hand at fishing. Harry caught a sharped-toothed catfish as he and Meghan shared a joke, one onlooker said.

"They are like regular guys. They were just relaxed," the person said. "You could see they were very happy together."

On an early morning game drive, the couple scoured the horizon for the wild animals that are the primary draw for wealthy clients visiting the Okavango, one of the largest inland deltas in the world.

In the most romantic offering at the camp, Harry and Meghan were driven out at twilight to a deserted area of the bush to the foot of an ancient baobab tree where they were served a three-course meal beside a glowing fire.

When they departed, Harry dealt out generous tips and one staff member shed a tear while waving the couple off from the resort's private airstrip, the sources said.

Botswana is popular with the rich and famous because of the privacy and isolation its top end lodges offer. Other recent visitors include former U.S. President George W. Bush, Saudi princes, Hollywood stars and millionaire footballers.

"They all come to Botswana because it's still a nice destination to go to where you're not bothered about paparazzi because you're far away from anything and everything," said Eric Muizebelt, manager of the nine-room Mapula Lodge.

"The people from Botswana are not like: 'I want to have an autograph or a picture'. People can come here and have their complete rest and peacefulness."

Before venturing into the Delta, Harry and Meghan spent a night at Meno a Kwena - meaning "teeth of the crocodile" - a camp of luxury tents overlooking the Boteti river where guests often hear the roar of lions during the night

Harry brought his then girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, to the same camp in 2007.

"It's an extremely romantic destination," said Hennie Rawlinson, owner of Meno a Kwena, where chefs prepare food over an open fire and guests dine al fresco.

"Almost every night we have a spectacular sunset. You find you are the only person in the wilderness."

Botswana, a country of around 2 million spread over an area the size of France, has always been a place of solace for Harry.

He first visited when he was 13, two months after his mother Princess Diana died, and he has returned several times for leisure and charity work. This year he became a patron of Rhino Conservation Botswana, a long-held passion of his.

(and we've all seen how smoke rises when you put water on fire) ... this rising of the sub-elemental of smoke carries the wood element above the surface of the water. Yaad-e-Bismillah: 60-year-old Man Carves Out Boat of Used Plastic Water Bottles | Varanasi News - T
VARANASI: An uncanny knack of creating something out of waste drove 60-year-old to carve out an eco-friendly boat out of discarded water bottles made of plastic. In fact, Bhaiya Lal of Panchkot Ghat hit upon the novel idea of building an eco-friendly 'plastic boat' after watching empty bottles littered on the steps of various ghats. It took him two years to complete the mission. This is the third such boat made by him. "The idea of creating a boat out of waste plastic bottles hit me when I used to swim in Ganga. I used to find used plastic bottles floating in the river which only added to the pollution so I decided to find a use for them," said Lal. "This is a much stronger and reliable boat compared to the previous two which I prepared a decade ago," he added. Talking about his creation, Lal explained, "The boat weighs around 40 kgs and has a frame of thick wires. There is an aluminum sheet on the outer side with woods in side and bronze coating on the outside. I have used 96 bottles (1 litre) in the base, 10 bottles (half litre) for support and three bottles (2 litres) on both the sides for balancing the boat. It looks distinctive and is a perfect pick for someone who wants to have fun and enjoy a joyous boat ride in the Ganga," he said. Lal, who calls himself an all-rounder and takes up any given work for a living, believes that his versatility is god-gifted. He said, "I have never gone to a college. Just good knowledge helps me to do any work. I believe in creating things. I cannot sit idle. Even in the past, I prepared a hammock, a wooden bed and a vehicle. Some creations worked, some failed but I did not give up." When inquired as to why he never took boat ride as a business to eke out a living, he said, "Many tourists have asked me to use the boats created by me to ferry them. But, I refused because I have made this boat for me and my grand children for fun and adventurous boat ride. I am planning to prepare a bigger boat with used bottles for tourists too." It may be mentioned here that this eight-and-a-half feet long plastic boat is not only different but also attractive as it has got over 450 LED colourful lights, a mini-television and a semi-waterproof radio set for entertainment. His love for using scrap materials has added a special feature to this boat. "This boat can also be used on roads with wheels (from an abandoned wheel-chair)," he said. At present the boat sails with the help of fibre and steel oars but Lal is planning to install an engine in it. "When I am on a ride with my kids and grandchildren it takes time to sail the boat, with the help of engine it will be automatic and will raft faster," he said. Sharing his impending inventions, Lal said, "I want to prepare a hand-glider now. That will help me fly high and touch the sky." He also displayed a wired framework of BJP-symbol 'Lotus' which is yet to be completed and said that he wishes to gift it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Rubberwood is a light-coloured medium-density tropical hardwood obtained from the Para Rubber Tree. Rubberwood is also a sustainable timber, so a rubberwood bed is an environmentally friendly choice as it makes use of plantation trees that have already served a useful function. Rubberwood is a very stable, durable material, with shrinkage and cracking kept to a minimum. Manufacturers nowadays generally opt for a tough, durable, but less expensive hardwood for the centre of the bed before adding a veneer to the surface, which creates a more expensive looking frame. These wooden beds generally have the appearance of oak or beech but are not as expensive. The veneer's thickness should always be taken into account, as thinner veneers are generally cheaper but are prone to tearing after time. Generally, the thicker the veneer, the more expensive the bed is. From Super Kingsize to Small Bed Frames, We Have it All. Suspect Arrested in Utah Motel Corpse Case
SALT LAKE CITY - A Utah man arrested early Friday in the killing of a woman whose body was found stuffed in the wooden frame of a bed at a Salt Lake City motel admitted to "actively causing her death," a probable cause statement said,State and local police captured Thomas Joseph Kumalac as he traveled aboard a bus bound for Wendover, Nev., the statement said. The 28-year-old is accused of killing Jessica Irene Jensen of Layton, Utah, whose body was discovered Thursday after a guest who checked into a room at the Capitol Hotel on the south side of Salt Lake City complained of a foul stench, the statement said. Jensen's body was found wrapped in a towel and stashed under the box springs and mattress in the wooden bed frame.Medical examiners estimated Jensen had been dead four or five days when her body was found, Salt Lake City police detective Lisa Pascadlo said.Kumalac used his New Jersey identification card to rent the room on May 27 and stayed at the hotel until May 31, which is when Jensen apparently died, the probable cause statement said.Utah state court records showed Jensen would have turned 26 on Monday.Kumalac was booked into Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder, witness tampering and obstruction of justice, the statement said. A motive for the killing, or even the way in which Jensen was killed, remained a mystery, Pascadlo said.Authorities also don't know the nature of Kumalac's and Jensen's relationship. But the probable cause statement said Jensen's stepmother told police she met Kumalac a couple of times when he visited Jensen with his girlfriend. An attorney was not listed for Kumalac, who remained in jail Friday afternoon."Words cannot express how we feel at the loss of our 'baby girl,'" Jensen's father, Michael Jensen, said in a statement. "She is sorely missed by us all."
Wooden Beds Or Metal Beds? Discover the Respond - 2024
When you are at the market looking for a comfortable bed for you, you will find numerous kinds of beds. The most famous preferred options when it comes to beds are metal beds and wooden beds. Metal beds are priced low as compared to wooden beds. Then, should you go for metal beds just because it priced low? Between metal beds and wooden beds, which one should you buy? Such questions will strike you at the store and you will find it quite difficult to make choice which one you should buy unless you are pretty sure about it. First of all, regardless of what the dealer says about both the beds, it is u to your requirements that will help in choosing the right bed for you. Both wooden bed and metal beds are available with good looking designs. However, the designs of the wooden beds are much more appealing and eye-catching. When a guest enters your bedroom, he will immediately notice an elegant wooden bed and you will become accustomed to listen to compliments of your bed. Metal beds require you to use spring-box or some sort of support for your mattress. This incurs more cost. This will make your inexpensive metal bed appear expensive. Wooden beds have flat wooden platform which supports wide range of mattresses and it does not require you to make use of any additional thing like spring-box for proper support. Since you are not spending money on spring-box, you will not be spending money on anything apart from the bed. Metal beds mostly do not come with headboard and footboard. However, wooden beds always come with headboard and footboard. Headboard and footboard play an important role as it provides support to the mattress. Since these things are not available with metal beds, you are supposed to spend money on a base like spring-box as mentioned earlier. Even though the metal beds appear to be sturdy, you will not be able to restore the beauty of the bed again when there is a dent on it. Moreover as time passes, the metal beds will lose its beauty and you within few years you will have to either spend good amount of money on fixing it or buy a new one. With wooden beds, it's a totally different case. Wooden beds are usually made up of sturdy wood obtained from trees like maple, beech, pine, etc. The wooden beds made from such wood are very durable and its beauty remains intact even after several years. The legs of the bed and other parts of the bed are very strong and it remains in fine condition unless someone unintentionally tries to break it. When the bed becomes old, it may not look good like it used to be when you got it. In such situations, you only need to spend a small amount of money on polish or varnish and you can bring back its original shine within seconds. Now that you are aware of the advantages of wooden beds over metal beds , you can easily make a choice and buy a comfortable bed.
Rockville Small Museums House Latvian Artifacts, Judaic Antiquities
Step into the Latvian Museum in Rockville and you could almost be in a 19th-century Latvian farmhouse.Detailed carvings adorn the wooden bed frame and table, and delicate embroidery draws color into clothing and other textiles. On a wall around the corner, rows of colorful mittens with intricate patterns serve as a reminder of the cultural traditions that arose from the country's frigid climate."Each area of Latvia has its own patterns; they mean different things," explained Inta Sraders, a volunteer at the museum. "Traditionally, in the good old days, the bride had to knit a pair of mittens for everybody in the wedding party and everybody in her husband's family. . . . A girl had to have lots of mittens."Although it only consists of a few small rooms, the museum proudly preserves and retells the story of Latvia, a Baltic country about the size of West Virginia, from prehistoric to modern times.Keeping the museum up and running is not always easy, however. Peggy Erickson, executive director of Heritage Montgomery, said many small museums cannot stay open, in part because of the cost of maintaining a building."If you look across the country, it's really sad. Some very significant small museums have closed because of operating expenses," she said. The Latvian Museum, at 400 Hurley Ave., stays open thanks to a close-knit Latvian community in the Washington area and welcomes Latvian Americans and the wider community to learn about Latvian history and culture."It really is an incredible little gem," Erickson said. Anita Terauds, another volunteer at the museum, pointed to a black-and-white photo of horse-drawn carts with families' belongings traveling single file down a country road in Latvia in about 1944. During World War II, Latvia was annexed first by Soviet Russia, then by Nazi Germany. When Latvians realized that Soviet forces again were coming to "run over" their country, Terauds said, many decided to leave. Terauds was about 10 years old when her family left."I still remember being the only one permitted to sit on top of that," she said, tapping her finger at a bundle on the back of one of the horse carts. "I was the only one light enough for the horses to pull. Then when the bombers came, everybody tried to find the closest ditch. Of course, the horses marched on."When the bombers left, she said, everyone climbed out of the ditch, scrambled to find the correct horse and continued down the road leading away from the oncoming Soviet occupation."There were masses and masses of refugees leaving the Baltic states," Terauds said. "They went to Sweden, they went to Germany - any country that would take them for the time being."Sraders lived in West Germany for about six years after leaving Latvia before her family moved to the United States."I've spent my whole adult life here," she said. Now, she volunteers at the museum, which chronicles the history of Latvia from ancient to modern times. Many of the Latvian Museum's artifacts came from immigrants like Terauds' and Sraders' families, who brought a few belongings with them when they fled Soviet rule. Other items were made in America by artisans who used traditional techniques and patterns to craft ceramics and carve furniture for the museum. Others, such as antique coins and two modern military uniforms from the Latvian embassy, were donated over the years.Donations are what keep the museum going - donations of artifacts, donations of money and donations of time by dedicated volunteers. The Latvian Museum, which opened in 1978, used to be open every Sunday afternoon, but eventually moved to an appointments-only policy. There is no set admission fee, but donations are accepted."It wasn't worth having the people here, because you'd [only] get a couple people," Sraders said. The museum tried advertising but struggled to attract visitors to a residential area without much foot traffic.Erickson said that for small museums in particular, attracting visitors and funding to stay open is an age-old quandary."It's not just getting a collection - you then have to think about how you're going to pay staff, how you're going to keep it open on weekends," she said. "The operating expenses get to be problematic."The Jane L. and Robert H. Weiner Judaic Museum is at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, so it is open whenever the community center is open. The museum, a collection of Judaic antiquities, is in the atrium outside the Goldman Art Gallery at the community center at 6125 Montrose Rd. in Rockville.Phyllis Altman, art gallery director, also manages the Judaic museum. "There are old oil jugs, there are some coins, there is some jewelry, there are menorahs," she said. All told, the display includes about 100 ancient artifacts.Another small museum, the Stonestreet Museum of 19th-Century Medicine, is managed and supported by the Montgomery County Historical Society. It also shares tour groups that come to visit the larger Beall-Dawson House, located on the same property in Rockville. The museum is one room, but it gives visitors a peek into what a doctor's office would have looked like in about 1852.Joanna Church, director of collections for the historical society, said although the Stonestreet museum is small, it houses medical collections from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as information about doctors and pharmacists who practiced locally in Montgomery County and Rockville."It's only a one-room museum, so it's easy to see everything," she said. The Latvian Museum also shares its facilities with like-minded organizations. It is in the lower level of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Washington, D.C. The building also houses offices for the American Latvian Association and the Joint Baltic American National Committee. To stay open, the museum depends on volunteers such as Terauds, who lives nearby and gives many of the tours."She's the heart and soul of the museum," said Anita Batarags, president of the American Latvian Association.Terauds formerly was the secretary general of the association."I thought I'd retired, but I guess not," she said with a shrug.Despite the difficulty of sustaining small museums, Erickson said there is value in keeping them open."There's pride in community, and people want to show off what was theirs," she said.Although museums might have an easier time staying open if they combined their funds into one site, communities take pride in their unique, local sites. For example, Montgomery County has three museums dedicated to the history of agriculture, but none of them is likely to give up its site."I think it's admirable, and I think it's wonderful," Erickson said. "Pride of place, pride of story."
The Appeal of Rustic Wooden Bedframes
Whether you're looking to remodel an out-of-date bedroom or you just feel like you need a change, a rustic wooden bedframe can help you achieve the look you've been searching for. Durability and stylishness are just two of the reasons that you might want to purchase a rustic bed frame, and after you've slept in one, you might never want to use anything else! There are many types of rustic bed frames available, and one of their charms is that they tend to be one of a kind, even the ones that are made to a certain style. Some rustic bed frames are made in a slat bed style, with flat boards forming the supports With this sort of bed, you may or may not need a box spring, depending on how the bed is designed. If you happen to be in a store that sells Amish goods, you might find a rope bed, where a criss-cross of cords woven through holes in the frame itself will support the mattress. Keep in mind that while a rope bed is lovely to look it, it will need routine tightening or your mattress will sag.Rustic wooden furniture is typically very durable and long-lasting. With a small amount of care, your wooden frame will greatly outlast a metal one, which will bend and warp over time. You can pass your rustic bed frame on to your children as long as you remember to dust it periodically and sponge it down gently with soap and water once a year. When you buy your bed frame, find out what was used to finish it and what the preferred procedure of care is.You should be aware of what kind of wood your bed frame is made of. Particleboard and plywood should never be used, as they are simultaneously heavy and breakable. You might find yourself favoring a bed frame made out of oak, which is durable but heavy or you might find a lighter frame made out of aromatic cedar or pine more attractive. Look for the material that suits you best, both in color and weight. One way to make rustic furniture work for you is by combining it with aggressively modern art fixtures, something that you can do as long as there is a common underlying theme. Bleached, bare frames made out of pine logs can be accented with plain white fixtures, giving your room a clean, scrubbed look. You can also decorate the bedroom completely with rustic touches to match your new bed frame; look for wedding ring quilts to hang on the wall or drape over the bed, or cover dresser tops with handwoven scarves or shawls.A rustic bed frame can be the main focal point of your bedroom or a complementing accent. If you are interested in a unique look for your bedroom, this is definitely one way to get it!
